How playout works
A scheduler holds the running order: what plays, when and for how long. The playout engine follows it, switching between recorded files and live inputs, overlaying graphics such as a channel logo or a now-and-next caption, and inserting markers where ad breaks fall.
The output is a live stream. From there it is encoded and delivered exactly as a live event would be.
Cloud playout
Playout used to mean racks of dedicated hardware in a broadcast facility. Cloud playout runs the same function as software, drawing programs straight from the on-demand library. A channel can be created in hours, run for a weekend and switched off, which has made pop-up and themed channels practical for services that are not broadcasters.
What a playout system needs to do
- Schedule days or weeks ahead, with loops and automatic fill for gaps
- Mix recorded programs with live inputs
- Insert ad-break markers that downstream ad systems can read
- Add logos, captions and emergency slates
- Produce a program guide feed that matches what is on air
- Fail over to a backup if an input or the engine stops
