How regional pricing works
Instead of setting a price for every country, the service defines a small number of bands, for example four, and assigns each country to one. The viewer's country decides which band's price they see.
Building the bands
- Rank countries by purchasing power and by what competing services charge there
- Group them into three to five bands
- Set a price per band, starting from your base price and scaling down
- Price your largest markets individually if they deserve it
- Show each price in a local currency where your payment provider supports it
Regional vs localized pricing
The terms overlap. Localized pricing means a price tuned to a single market, in its currency and with natural price points. Regional pricing is the coarser version, with one price shared across a group of markets. Most services start with regions and localize their biggest countries later.
Enforcement
A viewer in an expensive region may try to buy at a cheaper region's price. Check the country of the payment method as well as the IP address, and block known VPN ranges where your licenses require it.
