What is BVOD?

Broadcaster video on demand

BVOD (broadcaster video on demand) is a streaming service operated by a television broadcaster. It carries the broadcaster's programs on demand, usually with live streams of its channels, and is most often free and funded by advertising.

How BVOD works

Programs become available online at or shortly after broadcast and stay for a catch-up period or longer. Viewers watch through the broadcaster's own website and apps, and normally sign in with a free account.

Most BVOD services also simulcast the linear channels and add box sets, archive titles and content made only for streaming.

How BVOD earns

  • Advertising sold by the broadcaster's own sales team alongside its television airtime
  • Targeted ads using registration data, which earn more than broadcast spots
  • A paid tier that removes ads or adds early access and downloads
  • Sponsorship of programs and strands

BVOD vs AVOD

BVOD is a kind of AVOD defined by who runs it. Advertisers treat it separately because the content is professionally produced, brand-safe and measured in a way that can be planned together with television campaigns.

Planning a streaming service?
What does BVOD stand for?

BVOD stands for broadcaster video on demand.

Is BVOD always free?

Usually, but not always. Many broadcasters add a paid tier without ads, and some public broadcasters fund the service through a license fee instead of advertising.

Can a small regional channel run a BVOD service?

Yes. A managed streaming platform lets a single channel offer its live stream and a catch-up catalog under its own brand without building the technology.
