What counts as short-form
There is no official limit. In practice, short-form means under about three minutes, and often under one. The defining feature is the way it is consumed: one item after another, full screen, with a swipe to move on.
Short-form formats
- Clips and highlights cut from longer programs
- Reels: standalone short videos in a feed
- Trailers and previews that lead to a full title
- Microdramas: serialized fiction in one- to three-minute episodes
- User-generated videos uploaded by viewers or creators
How services use and monetize it
- Discovery: a feed of clips that leads viewers into long-form titles
- Retention: something new to watch every time the app is opened
- Advertising between items in the feed, and rewarded ads
- Pay-per-episode unlocking with coins for serialized stories
- A subscription pass that removes ads and locks
Short-form vs long-form
Long-form is chosen deliberately and watched for a sitting; short-form is sampled and judged in seconds. That changes what the product needs: instant start, preloading of the next item, a feed that adapts to what each viewer finishes, and measurement by completion and swipe-away rather than by minutes alone.
