## Formulas

- Recommended bitrate per rendition: `baseline × codec factor × frame-rate factor × motion factor`
- Recommended range: 80% to 120% of the recommended bitrate
- ABR ladder: the selected top resolution plus every lower rendition down to 240p
- Bits per pixel: `bitrate ÷ (width × height × fps)`
- File size (MB): `(video Mbps + audio Mbps) × seconds ÷ 8`
- GB per viewing hour: file size of one hour at that rendition (video + audio) ÷ 1,000
- Full ladder storage: sum of the file sizes of every rendition in the ladder

## Worked example: 1080p (Full HD), H.264 / AVC, 30 fps, standard

| Result | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Recommended bitrate | 5 Mbps (range 4 Mbps – 6 Mbps) |
| File size | 2.3 GB for 60 min including audio |
| Per viewing hour | 2.3 GB at top quality |
| Full ladder storage | 5.2 GB (5 renditions × 60 min) |

| Rendition | Resolution | Video bitrate | Range (Mbps) | Bits/pixel | GB / hour |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1080p (Full HD) | 1920×1080 | 5 Mbps | 4–6 | 0.08 | 2.31 |
| 720p (HD) | 1280×720 | 3 Mbps | 2.4–3.6 | 0.109 | 1.41 |
| 540p | 960×540 | 1.8 Mbps | 1.4–2.2 | 0.116 | 0.87 |
| 360p | 640×360 | 800 kbps | 0.6–1 | 0.116 | 0.42 |
| 240p | 426×240 | 400 kbps | 0.3–0.5 | 0.13 | 0.24 |

## Quick reference: recommended top bitrate by codec

Standard motion. Values from the same formulas as the calculator.

| Resolution | H.264 / AVC 30 fps | H.264 / AVC 60 fps | HEVC / H.265 30 fps | HEVC / H.265 60 fps | AV1 30 fps | AV1 60 fps |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 2160p (4K) | 16 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 9.6 Mbps | 14.4 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p (2K / QHD) | 9 Mbps | 13.5 Mbps | 5.4 Mbps | 8.1 Mbps | 4.5 Mbps | 6.8 Mbps |
| 1080p (Full HD) | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 4.5 Mbps | 2.5 Mbps | 3.8 Mbps |
| 720p (HD) | 3 Mbps | 4.5 Mbps | 1.8 Mbps | 2.7 Mbps | 1.5 Mbps | 2.3 Mbps |
| 540p | 1.8 Mbps | 2.7 Mbps | 1.1 Mbps | 1.6 Mbps | 900 kbps | 1.4 Mbps |

> Note: Starting points based on common streaming encoding guidelines. Content-aware or per-title encoding can go 20–40% lower for the same quality. Test with your own footage.

## How the recommendations are built

The calculator starts from widely used H.264 bitrates at 30 fps for typical film and series content, then adjusts for four things:

- **Codec:** HEVC uses about 60% of the H.264 bitrate, AV1 about 50%.
- **Frame rate:** 50–60 fps needs about 1.5× the bitrate of 30 fps; 24–25 fps slightly less.
- **Motion:** sports and concerts need more bits; talks and animation need fewer.
- **Resolution:** each rung below your top resolution gets its own bitrate, forming the ABR ladder.

## File size formula

`size (MB) = (video Mbps + audio Mbps) × seconds ÷ 8`

Storage for a streaming catalog is the sum across every rendition in the ladder, which is why the “full ladder storage” figure is larger than a single file.

## From bitrate to cost

Bitrate drives delivery cost directly. Plug your average bitrate into the [streaming bandwidth and CDN cost calculator](https://www.rentanott.com/tools/streaming-bandwidth-cost-calculator), and read [2K video resolution explained](https://www.rentanott.com/blogs/2k-video-resolution) for when 1440p is worth offering.

## Frequently asked questions

### What bitrate should I use for 1080p streaming?

For 1080p at 30 fps in H.264, around 4–6 Mbps is a good starting point for films and series. Sports and other high-motion content at 60 fps can need 8–10 Mbps. HEVC needs roughly 40% less and AV1 roughly 50% less for similar quality.

### What bitrate is needed for 4K streaming?

4K at 30 fps in H.264 needs around 13–20 Mbps. Most 4K streaming uses HEVC or AV1 instead, which brings it down to roughly 8–12 Mbps. High frame rate or HDR sports can need more.

### What bitrate should I use for 2K (1440p) video?

1440p, often called 2K or QHD in streaming, works well around 7–11 Mbps in H.264 at 30 fps, or about 4.5–6.5 Mbps in HEVC. In cinema, '2K' means 2048×1080, which is close to 1080p bitrates.

### How do I calculate video file size from bitrate?

File size in megabytes = total bitrate in Mbps × duration in seconds ÷ 8. A 60-minute video at 5 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio is about 5.128 × 3,600 ÷ 8 ≈ 2,300 MB, or 2.3 GB.

### What is an ABR ladder?

An adaptive bitrate (ABR) ladder is the set of renditions a video is encoded into, from low to high resolution. HLS and DASH players switch between them as the viewer's connection changes, so playback keeps going without buffering.

### What does bits per pixel mean?

Bits per pixel (bpp) is bitrate divided by width × height × frame rate. It shows how much data each pixel gets. For H.264, roughly 0.07–0.1 bpp suits typical streaming; newer codecs need less.
