| TVOD | Average price | $4.99 | |
| TVOD | Purchases per buyer / month | 1.2 | |

## Formulas

The projection runs month by month for the selected number of months. Percentages are used as fractions.

- SVOD subscribers: `subs = subs × (1 − SVOD churn) + visitors × visitor→subscriber`
- SVOD revenue: `subs × monthly price × (1 − fees)`
- AVOD free viewers: `free = free × (1 − AVOD churn) + visitors × visitor→free viewer`
- AVOD revenue per viewer: `watch hours × ads per hour × fill rate × CPM ÷ 1,000`
- TVOD revenue: `visitors × visitors who buy × purchases per buyer × average price × (1 − fees)` (a new set of buyers each month)
- Hybrid: SVOD revenue plus ad revenue from free viewers, where the free sign-up rate is `max(0, visitor→free viewer − visitor→subscriber)` so subscribers are not counted twice
- Break-even month: first month whose net revenue ≥ monthly operating cost
- After operating costs: `total revenue − operating cost × months`
- SVOD lifetime value (LTV): `price × (1 − fees) ÷ churn`; average life ≈ `1 ÷ churn` months
- SVOD steady state: `visitors × visitor→subscriber ÷ churn` subscribers (when sign-ups equal cancellations)

## Worked example with the default inputs

| Model | Month 12 revenue | 12-month total | After operating costs | Audience | Break-even |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| SVOD | $59.3K | $428.9K | $248.9K | 8,735 | Month 3 |
| AVOD | $10.5K | $84K | -$96K | 26,144 | Not within 12 months |
| TVOD | $3,817 | $45.8K | -$134.2K | 750 | Not within 12 months |
| Hybrid (best) | $67.2K | $491.9K | $311.9K | 28,343 | Month 2 |

With the defaults, Hybrid earns the most over 12 months. SVOD lifetime value is $113 net per subscriber (about 16.7 months average life), and SVOD reaches a steady state of about 16,667 subscribers. At 6% monthly churn, about 48% of subscribers are still subscribed after 12 months.

> Note: Estimates only. Real results depend on content, acquisition spend, pricing and retention. Revenue is counted for the full month a user joins, and TVOD assumes a new set of buyers each month. Net revenue is after payment and app-store fees; AVOD uses net CPM, so the ad-network share is already removed.

## How the calculator works

Every model starts from the same number: the people who reach your app or website each month. Each model then turns a share of those visitors into revenue in a different way.

- **SVOD** converts visitors into paying subscribers. Each month new subscribers join and a share cancel (churn), so revenue climbs until sign-ups and cancellations balance out.
- **AVOD** converts more visitors into free viewers and earns from ads: watch hours × ads per hour × fill rate × CPM ÷ 1,000.
- **TVOD** earns from one-off rentals or purchases each month, with no recurring base.
- **Hybrid** runs a paid tier and a free ad tier together. Visitors who subscribe are not counted again as free viewers.

## Which numbers move revenue most

For subscriptions, **churn** usually matters more than price. Cutting churn from 8% to 5% raises steady-state subscribers by 60%, because each subscriber stays longer. For ads, revenue grows with watch time and reach, so AVOD rarely wins below a few hundred thousand monthly visitors.

Use the break-even month to sanity-check your plan. If no model covers your operating cost within 12 months, look at acquisition, a hybrid model or [localized pricing](https://www.rentanott.com/tools/localized-pricing-calculator) before cutting price across the board.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I calculate OTT subscription revenue?

Multiply active subscribers by your monthly price, then subtract payment and app-store fees. Active subscribers change each month: add new sign-ups (visitors × conversion rate) and remove cancellations (subscribers × churn rate). The calculator runs this month by month.

### Which is more profitable: SVOD, AVOD or TVOD?

It depends on audience size and engagement. SVOD usually wins with a loyal niche audience and low churn. AVOD needs large reach and long watch time, because each viewer earns only cents per hour. TVOD suits premieres, events and new releases. Many services run a hybrid: a paid tier plus a free tier with ads.

### What is a good churn rate for a streaming service?

Monthly churn of 4–8% is typical for subscription video. Niche services with unique content can run lower, while services that rely on one show or season often spike higher after it ends. Annual plans and bundles are common ways to reduce churn.

### How is subscriber lifetime value (LTV) calculated?

A simple LTV is net monthly revenue per subscriber divided by monthly churn. For example, a $7.99 plan with 15% fees and 6% churn gives roughly $6.79 ÷ 0.06 ≈ $113 per subscriber. Compare this to what you spend to acquire a subscriber.

### What CPM should I use for AVOD estimates?

Use the net CPM you receive after your ad network takes its share. Connected TV and premium long-form video earn higher CPMs than mobile or short-form, and CPMs vary a lot by country, so model several values.
