# What is watch time?

Watch time is the total amount of time viewers spend actually playing video on a service, usually reported in hours per month. It is the most direct measure of how much a service is used.

## How watch time is measured

The player sends a heartbeat at regular intervals while video is playing. Adding the intervals gives time watched. Paused, buffering and background time are excluded, and the total can be broken down by title, viewer, device, plan and day.

## Related measures

- Watch time per viewer: total hours divided by active viewers
- Average view duration: watch time for a title divided by the number of plays
- Completion rate: the share of plays that reach the end
- Session length: time watched in one sitting

## Why watch time matters

- Retention: subscribers who watch more are less likely to cancel
- Advertising: ad impressions are watch hours multiplied by ads per hour and fill rate
- Cost: delivery volume is watch hours multiplied by average bitrate
- Programming: hours per title show what the audience values, beyond how many people clicked
- Licensing: revenue is often shared between rights holders in proportion to hours watched

## Reading it carefully

Total watch time rises simply because the audience grew. Per-viewer figures show whether the service is becoming more or less engaging. A long title naturally collects more hours than a short one, so compare titles on completion as well.

- [Completion rate](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/completion-rate) — Completion rate is the percentage of plays of a video that reach the end, or a defined point near it. It shows whether a title holds the people who start it.
- [Video analytics](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/video-analytics) — Video analytics is the measurement of how a streaming service is used and how it performs: who the viewers are, what they watch and for how long, what revenue results and how reliably the video plays.
- [Retention rate](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/retention-rate) — Retention rate is the percentage of subscribers, or users, who are still with a service at the end of a period out of those who were there at the start. It is the mirror image of churn rate.
- [Ad load](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/ad-load) — Ad load is the amount of advertising shown per hour of viewing, expressed either as minutes of ads per hour or as the number of ads per hour. It is the main lever an ad-supported service has over both revenue and viewer tolerance.
- [CPM](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/cpm) — CPM (cost per mille) is the price an advertiser pays for one thousand ad impressions. It is the standard unit for pricing video advertising, and the rate a streaming service earns for each thousand ads it shows.
- [Bandwidth](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/bandwidth) — Bandwidth is the maximum rate at which data can be transferred over a connection, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). In streaming the word is also used for the total volume of video delivered to viewers in a month, measured in gigabytes or terabytes.
- [MAU](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/mau) — MAU (monthly active users) is the number of unique users who were active on a service at least once during a month. On a streaming service, active usually means signing in or starting playback.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is watch time the same as views?

No. A view counts that playback started. Watch time counts how long it continued. A title can have many views and little watch time if people leave quickly.

### How many hours does a typical subscriber watch?

It varies enormously by type of service. A niche service may see a few hours a month per subscriber and still retain well, so judge against your own trend.

### How does watch time affect cost?

Each hour watched is roughly 0.45 GB of delivery per Mbps of average bitrate, so more viewing means a larger CDN bill.
