# What is video piracy?

Video piracy is the copying, distribution or restreaming of video without the permission of its rights holder. For a streaming service it means paying audiences watching for free elsewhere, and it can put content licenses at risk.

## How streaming content is pirated

- Link sharing: an unprotected stream address passed around
- Credential sharing and theft: logins sold or posted publicly
- Stream ripping: tools that download an unencrypted or weakly protected stream
- Screen and HDMI capture: recording the output of a legitimate playback
- Live restreaming: capturing a live event and rebroadcasting it within seconds
- Camera recording: filming a screen

## Defenses, matched to the method

- Signed URLs and tokens against link sharing and hotlinking
- Stream and device limits, and sign-in verification, against shared credentials
- DRM against ripping and, with hardware protection, against screen capture
- HDCP against capture from the cable
- Geo-blocking and VPN detection against out-of-territory access
- Forensic watermarking to trace capture and restreaming to an account
- Monitoring and takedown notices against copies already online

## Live events are a special case

A film leaked a week after release has lost some value. A match restreamed live has lost nearly all of it, because the value exists only while it is happening. Protection for live events therefore has to work in minutes: watermark detection during the event and the ability to cut off the source account immediately.

## Proportion

No measure stops everything, and each has a cost in money or in inconvenience to honest viewers. Match protection to the value of the content and to what your licenses require. Often the most effective anti-piracy measure is a legitimate service that is easy to use and fairly priced in each market.

## Related terms

- [DRM](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/drm) — DRM (digital rights management) is technology that encrypts video and controls who can decrypt it. A viewer's device must obtain a license from a license server before it can play the stream, and the license sets the rules for that playback.
- [Forensic watermarking](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/forensic-watermarking) — Forensic watermarking embeds an invisible identifier, unique to each viewer or session, into the video itself. If a copy appears on a piracy site, the identifier can be extracted to find the account it came from.
- [Signed URL](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/signed-url) — A signed URL is a web address for a video stream that includes a cryptographic signature and an expiry time. The CDN serves the content only if the signature is valid and the link has not expired, so a copied or shared link stops working. Using signed URLs for playback is called tokenized playback.
- [Screen-recording protection](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/screen-recording-protection) — Screen-recording protection is the set of measures that prevent or deter viewers from capturing video with screenshots or screen-recording software. Its core is hardware-level DRM, which makes protected video appear black in a capture.
- [Password sharing](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/password-sharing) — Password sharing is the use of one streaming account by people who are not part of the subscriber's household, so that several households watch on a single subscription. It ranges from a family member in another city to credentials sold or posted publicly.
- [Geo-blocking](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/geo-blocking) — Geo-blocking is restricting access to video according to the viewer's location, so that a title can only be played in the countries or regions where the service holds the rights to show it.
- [Secure video streaming](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/secure-video-streaming) — Secure video streaming is delivering video so that only authorized viewers can watch it and copies are hard to make. It is achieved by combining several layers: encrypted delivery, access tokens, DRM, account controls and watermarking.
- [Live pay-per-view](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/live-ppv) — Live pay-per-view is selling access to a single live stream for a one-time ticket price. The buyer can watch that event as it happens and usually a replay for a limited time afterward.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can piracy be stopped completely?

No. The aim is to make it difficult, to limit the quality of what can be copied and to trace and remove leaks quickly.

### What is the most common weakness in small streaming services?

Stream addresses that work for anyone who has them, and accounts with no limit on simultaneous use. Both are fixed with tokenized playback and stream limits.

### Does lower pricing reduce piracy?

It helps. Where a legitimate option is affordable and convenient, fewer people look for an illegal one, which is one argument for pricing by market.
