# What is a video CMS?

A video CMS (content management system) is the back-office application where a streaming team uploads video, adds metadata and artwork, organizes titles into a catalog, sets who can watch and at what price, and publishes to the website and apps.

## What a video CMS manages

- Content: uploads, encoding status, titles, descriptions, artwork, trailers, subtitles and audio tracks
- Structure: series, seasons, episodes, collections and genres
- Availability: publish and expiry dates, regions and release windows
- Commerce: plans, prices, rentals, coupons and bundles
- Audience: users, devices, entitlements and support actions
- Experience: home page rows, navigation, branding and languages

## Video CMS vs a general CMS

A website CMS manages pages and articles. A video CMS is built around the video asset: it triggers encoding on upload, understands series and seasons, attaches rights and prices to each title and pushes changes to every app at once, without an app update.

## What to look for

- Roles and permissions, so editors, finance and support each see only what they need
- Bulk upload and metadata import for large catalogs
- Scheduling: publish and unpublish automatically by date and region
- Layout control: change the home page without a developer
- An API and webhooks, to connect other systems

A role-based CMS is included on every RentAnOTT plan, covering content, commerce, audience and experience: catalog and metadata, plans and pricing, users and entitlements, and home page layouts with remote configuration. [See the CMS](https://www.rentanott.com/features#control).

- [Content metadata](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/content-metadata) — Content metadata is the information that describes a video title and governs how it is presented and used: its title, synopsis, cast, genre, rating, artwork, languages, rights and technical details. It is what makes a file into a catalog entry.
- [RBAC](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/rbac) — RBAC (role-based access control) is a way of managing permissions in which each user is assigned a role, such as editor or finance, and each role is allowed a defined set of actions. In a streaming CMS it controls who can upload, publish, change prices, see revenue or manage subscribers.
- [OTT platform](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/ott-platform) — An OTT platform is the software and infrastructure a business uses to run its own streaming service. It covers content management, encoding, delivery, the video player, subscriptions and payments, apps and analytics.
- [Content migration](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/content-migration) — Content migration is moving a streaming service from one platform to another: the video files, metadata and artwork, the plans and prices, and the subscriber accounts with their active subscriptions.
- [Video API](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/video-api) — A video API is a programming interface that lets other software work with a video platform: uploading files, starting encoding, managing a catalog, checking entitlements, requesting playback and retrieving analytics, without a person using the dashboard.
- [Release window](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/release-window) — A release window is a period during which a title is available through one distribution channel or business model before it moves to the next. Windowing is the practice of ordering those periods so that each audience pays the most it is willing to.
- [Online video platform](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/online-video-platform) — An online video platform (OVP) is a service that lets a business upload, encode, store, deliver and play video, typically through an embeddable player and an API, with analytics on how it is watched.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does CMS stand for?

CMS stands for content management system.

### Is a video CMS the same as a video hosting service?

No. Hosting stores and delivers the files. A video CMS organizes them into a product: a catalog with rights, prices and a storefront. An OTT platform includes both.

### Can non-technical staff run a video CMS?

That is its purpose. Uploading a title, scheduling it, changing a price or rearranging the home page should not need a developer.
