# What is vertical video?

Vertical video is video framed in portrait orientation, taller than it is wide, most often at a 9:16 aspect ratio. It fills the screen of a phone held upright, so the viewer does not need to rotate the device.

## Vertical video specifications

- Aspect ratio: 9:16 is standard; 4:5 and 1:1 are also used in feeds
- Resolution: 1080 × 1920 pixels for Full HD; 720 × 1280 as a lower rung
- Frame rate: 24, 25 or 30 frames per second for drama; 60 for sport and gaming
- Safe areas: keep faces, text and subtitles clear of the top and bottom edges, where app controls sit

## Why vertical matters

People hold phones upright most of the time. A horizontal video played that way occupies about a third of the screen; a vertical one fills it. Short-form apps made full-screen vertical viewing the default, and audiences now expect it for anything they watch casually on a phone.

## What a streaming service needs

- A player that shows vertical video full screen and swipes between items
- Encoding ladders built for portrait dimensions, not a landscape ladder rotated
- Vertical artwork and thumbnails
- Catalog support for both orientations, so a service can carry films and vertical series together
- Sensible presentation on televisions and desktops, where vertical video is pillarboxed

## Shooting for vertical

Vertical framing favors people over places: close-ups, one or two characters, movement toward and away from the camera. Cropping a horizontal master rarely works well, because the composition was made for a wide frame. Content intended for phones is best shot vertically from the start.

## Vertical video on RentAnOTT

Vertical video and reels are included on every RentAnOTT plan alongside movies, series and music, so one catalog can carry both orientations. [See pricing](https://www.rentanott.com/pricing).

- [Microdrama](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/microdrama) — A microdrama is a serialized fiction story told in very short episodes, typically one to three minutes each, filmed vertically for viewing on a phone. A series often runs to dozens of episodes, each ending on a hook that leads into the next.

- [Reels](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/reels) — Reels are short vertical videos, typically 15 to 90 seconds long, presented in a full-screen feed that the viewer swipes through one after another. The format was popularized by social apps and is now built into many streaming apps.
- [Video resolution](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/video-resolution) — Video resolution is the number of pixels that make up each frame of a video, written as width by height, such as 1920 × 1080. More pixels can show finer detail, and require more data to store and deliver.
- [Bitrate ladder](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/bitrate-ladder) — A bitrate ladder, or encoding ladder, is the list of versions a video is encoded into for adaptive streaming. Each rung pairs a resolution with a bitrate, and the player moves up and down the rungs as the viewer's connection changes.
- [Video player](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/video-player) — A video player is the software on a viewer's device that requests a stream, decodes it and displays it, and provides the controls for watching. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is the aspect ratio of vertical video?

Usually 9:16, which is a standard widescreen frame turned on its side. At Full HD that is 1080 pixels wide by 1920 tall.

### Does vertical video need a different bitrate?

The pixel count is the same as the horizontal equivalent, so similar bitrates apply. What changes is the ladder's dimensions, which should be defined in portrait.

### Can vertical video be watched on a television?

Yes, with black bars at the sides. It is designed for phones, so most services that carry it treat mobile as the main screen.
