# What is short-form video?

Short-form video is video that lasts from a few seconds to a few minutes, usually vertical and watched in a continuous, swipeable feed on a phone. It covers clips, reels and the episodes of microdramas.

## What counts as short-form

There is no official limit. In practice, short-form means under about three minutes, and often under one. The defining feature is the way it is consumed: one item after another, full screen, with a swipe to move on.

## Short-form formats

- Clips and highlights cut from longer programs
- Reels: standalone short videos in a feed
- Trailers and previews that lead to a full title
- Microdramas: serialized fiction in one- to three-minute episodes
- User-generated videos uploaded by viewers or creators

## How services use and monetize it

- Discovery: a feed of clips that leads viewers into long-form titles
- Retention: something new to watch every time the app is opened
- Advertising between items in the feed, and rewarded ads
- Pay-per-episode unlocking with coins for serialized stories
- A subscription pass that removes ads and locks

## Short-form vs long-form

Long-form is chosen deliberately and watched for a sitting; short-form is sampled and judged in seconds. That changes what the product needs: instant start, preloading of the next item, a feed that adapts to what each viewer finishes, and measurement by completion and swipe-away rather than by minutes alone.

Reels and vertical video are included on every RentAnOTT plan alongside long-form movies and series. Coins and virtual purchases for episodic unlocks are a $119/month add-on. [See pricing](https://www.rentanott.com/pricing).

- [Microdrama](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/microdrama) — A microdrama is a serialized fiction story told in very short episodes, typically one to three minutes each, filmed vertically for viewing on a phone. - [Reels](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/reels) — Reels are short vertical videos, typically 15 to 90 seconds long, presented in a full-screen feed that the viewer swipes through one after another. The format was popularized by social apps and is now built into many streaming apps.

- [UGC](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/ugc) — UGC (user-generated content) is video created and uploaded by the users of a platform instead of being produced or licensed by the platform's owner. ## Frequently asked questions

### How long is a short-form video?

Typically anything from a few seconds to about three minutes. Most feeds favor items under a minute.

### Can a subscription service use short-form video?

Yes. Many use a free feed of clips and trailers to help viewers find something to watch, and keep the full titles behind the subscription.

### Does short-form video have to be vertical?

No, but nearly all of it is, because it is made for phones held upright.
