# What is a self-hosted OTT platform?

A self-hosted OTT platform is streaming software that you license, usually for a one-time fee and sometimes with source code, and then install and operate on your own cloud account or on-premise servers.

## How self-hosted OTT works

The vendor delivers the software and helps deploy it. From then on the infrastructure is yours: you pay the cloud or data-center bills, arrange the delivery network, apply updates and respond when something fails.

## The costs beyond the license

- Hosting: servers, databases and storage
- Delivery: a CDN contract of your own
- Engineers to deploy, monitor, secure and upgrade the system
- DRM licenses and third-party services
- Updating every app as device platforms change each year
- Support or upgrade contracts with the vendor after the first period

## When self-hosting is the right choice

Owning source code only helps if you have a team to maintain it. Without one, a managed platform is usually cheaper in total and far quicker to launch.

- Regulation or policy requires video and data to stay on your own infrastructure
- You need to modify the code for something no platform offers
- You already employ a team that runs video systems
- Your scale is large enough that owning the stack is cheaper than renting it

## Self-hosted OTT on RentAnOTT

RentAnOTT is managed, not self-hosted: there is no license fee, no hosting to arrange and no source code to maintain. Scale customers can add a dedicated stack from $449/month. [Compare managed and self-hosted](https://www.rentanott.com/vplayed-alternative).

## Related terms

- [Managed OTT](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/managed-ott) — A managed OTT platform, also called OTT SaaS, is streaming software that the vendor hosts, operates and updates on your behalf for a recurring fee. You run the content and the business; the vendor runs the technology.
- [OTT platform](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/ott-platform) — An OTT platform is the software and infrastructure a business uses to run its own streaming service. It covers content management, encoding, delivery, the video player, subscriptions and payments, apps and analytics.
- [White-label OTT](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/white-label-ott) — A white-label OTT platform is ready-made streaming technology that a business launches under its own name, logo and domain. The vendor builds and operates the software; viewers see only the business's brand.
- [IPTV middleware](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/iptv-middleware) — IPTV middleware is the software layer that sits between an operator's video systems and its subscribers' devices. It manages accounts, channel packages, the program guide, on-demand content, billing integration and set-top boxes.
- [Headless OTT](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/headless-ott) — A headless OTT platform is a streaming back end offered without a ready-made front end. Content management, video processing, entitlements and billing are exposed through APIs, and the customer builds its own website and apps on top.
- [Egress cost](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/egress-cost) — Egress cost is the charge for data leaving a cloud provider's or CDN's network, billed per gigabyte transferred. For a streaming service it is the cost of delivering video to viewers, and it is usually the largest variable cost of the service.
- [Auto-scaling](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/auto-scaling) — Auto-scaling is the automatic adjustment of computing capacity to match demand. When load rises, more servers are started; when it falls, they are shut down. For a streaming service it is what keeps sign-in, playback and payment working through an evening peak or a live event.
- [SLA](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/sla) — An SLA (service-level agreement) is the part of a contract in which a vendor commits to measurable levels of service, such as uptime and support response times, and states what the customer receives if those levels are missed.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is self-hosted OTT cheaper than a managed platform?

The license can look cheaper over several years, but hosting, delivery and engineering salaries usually outweigh the saving unless you are large or already have the team.

### Does self-hosted mean on-premise?

Not necessarily. It means you operate the software. That can be on your own servers or in a cloud account that you control.

### Can I move from self-hosted to managed later?

Yes. It is a migration: the catalog, metadata and subscriber accounts are imported into the managed platform and the apps are replaced.
