# What is secure video streaming?

Secure video streaming is delivering video so that only authorized viewers can watch it and copies are hard to make. It is achieved by combining several layers: encrypted delivery, access tokens, DRM, account controls and watermarking.

## The layers of a secure stream

- Transport encryption (HTTPS): protects the connection between viewer and server
- Signed URLs and tokens: stream addresses that expire and work only for the session they were issued to
- Content encryption (AES-128): scrambles the video segments themselves
- DRM: delivers the decryption key inside a license that only a protected module on the device can read
- Geo rules: playback only where you hold the rights
- Device and concurrent-stream limits: one account cannot serve a crowd
- Forensic watermarking: a leaked copy can be traced to its source

## How much security a service needs

Match the protection to the content. Free and promotional video needs HTTPS and little else. Paid content you own is well served by signed URLs, account limits and encryption. Licensed films, series and sport normally require multi-DRM, and the most valuable titles require watermarking as well.

Rights holders set out their requirements in the license, so read it before choosing a plan or a platform.

## Common weak points

- A paywall enforced only in the app, with stream addresses that anyone can replay
- Tokens that never expire
- No limit on simultaneous streams, so one login is shared widely
- DRM on the web player but not in the apps, or the reverse

## Secure video streaming on RentAnOTT

Signed URLs, tokenized playback, geo rules, device limits and concurrent-stream caps are available on RentAnOTT. Multi-DRM is included on Growth and Scale, and forensic watermarking is an add-on from $229/month. [See security features](https://www.rentanott.com/features#security).

## Related terms

- [DRM](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/drm) — DRM (digital rights management) is technology that encrypts video and controls who can decrypt it. A viewer's device must obtain a license from a license server before it can play the stream, and the license sets the rules for that playback.
- [Multi-DRM](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/multi-drm) — Multi-DRM is the use of several DRM systems, normally Widevine, FairPlay and PlayReady, to protect the same video so that it plays securely on every browser, phone and television.
- [Signed URL](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/signed-url) — A signed URL is a web address for a video stream that includes a cryptographic signature and an expiry time. The CDN serves the content only if the signature is valid and the link has not expired, so a copied or shared link stops working. Using signed URLs for playback is called tokenized playback.
- [AES-128 encryption](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/aes-128) — AES-128 is the Advanced Encryption Standard with a 128-bit key. In streaming it is used to encrypt video segments so they cannot be played without the key. The term usually refers to the basic encryption built into HLS, in which the player fetches the key from a URL listed in the playlist.
- [Geo-blocking](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/geo-blocking) — Geo-blocking is restricting access to video according to the viewer's location, so that a title can only be played in the countries or regions where the service holds the rights to show it.
- [Concurrent stream limit](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/concurrent-stream-limit) — A concurrent stream limit is the maximum number of devices that can play video on one account at the same moment. When the limit is reached, a further device is refused or an existing stream is stopped.
- [Forensic watermarking](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/forensic-watermarking) — Forensic watermarking embeds an invisible identifier, unique to each viewer or session, into the video itself. If a copy appears on a piracy site, the identifier can be extracted to find the account it came from.
- [Video piracy](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/video-piracy) — Video piracy is the copying, distribution or restreaming of video without the permission of its rights holder. For a streaming service it means paying audiences watching for free elsewhere, and it can put content licenses at risk.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is HTTPS enough to secure a video stream?

No. HTTPS protects the connection from eavesdropping, but anyone with the stream address can still download the video. Access tokens and encryption of the content itself are needed to control who can play it.

### Do I need DRM to sell video?

Not always. For content you own, tokenized playback and account limits are often sufficient. DRM becomes necessary when a rights holder demands it or when copies would materially cost you sales.

### Can any stream be made impossible to copy?

No. A determined person can film a screen. The aim is to make copying difficult, limit the quality of what can be captured and make leaks traceable.
