# What is screen-recording protection?

Screen-recording protection is the set of measures that prevent or deter viewers from capturing video with screenshots or screen-recording software. Its core is hardware-level DRM, which makes protected video appear black in a capture.

## How capture is blocked

With hardware-backed DRM, decrypted frames travel through a protected path inside the device that ordinary software cannot read. A recording app or screenshot sees a black rectangle where the video should be. On external displays, HDCP protects the cable link so that capture hardware cannot record the signal.

## Protection by platform

- iOS, iPadOS and tvOS: FairPlay-protected video is blanked in recordings and screenshots
- Android: apps can mark the playback window as secure, and Widevine L1 devices use a protected video path
- Smart TVs and streaming devices: closed systems with hardware DRM, and no general recording apps
- Desktop browsers: the weakest point; many use software-level DRM, which rights holders limit to lower resolutions

## What it cannot stop

Nothing prevents someone pointing a camera at a screen, and devices with broken or software-only protection can be captured. The practical defenses are to restrict resolution on less secure devices, so that any copy is of poor quality, and to add forensic watermarking, so that a copy can be traced to the account it came from.

## Deterrents

- A visible watermark showing the viewer's email or ID, used for screeners and corporate video
- Limits on simultaneous streams and devices, which reduce the accounts available to pirates
- Monitoring of piracy sites and fast takedown requests

## Screen-recording protection on RentAnOTT

Multi-DRM with Widevine, FairPlay and PlayReady is included on the RentAnOTT Growth and Scale tiers, and forensic watermarking is an add-on from $229/month for high-value and pre-release content. [See security features](https://www.rentanott.com/features#security).

## Related terms

- [DRM](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/drm) — DRM (digital rights management) is technology that encrypts video and controls who can decrypt it. A viewer's device must obtain a license from a license server before it can play the stream, and the license sets the rules for that playback.
- [Forensic watermarking](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/forensic-watermarking) — Forensic watermarking embeds an invisible identifier, unique to each viewer or session, into the video itself. If a copy appears on a piracy site, the identifier can be extracted to find the account it came from.
- [Widevine](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/widevine) — Widevine is Google's DRM system. It protects streamed video on Android phones and tablets, Android TV and Google TV, Chrome and other browsers, and most smart TVs and streaming devices outside Apple's ecosystem.
- [FairPlay](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/fairplay) — FairPlay Streaming is Apple's DRM system. It protects video delivered over HLS to iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Safari on Mac, and is the only DRM those devices support for native playback.
- [Video piracy](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/video-piracy) — Video piracy is the copying, distribution or restreaming of video without the permission of its rights holder. For a streaming service it means paying audiences watching for free elsewhere, and it can put content licenses at risk.
- [Multi-DRM](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/multi-drm) — Multi-DRM is the use of several DRM systems, normally Widevine, FairPlay and PlayReady, to protect the same video so that it plays securely on every browser, phone and television.
- [Secure video streaming](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/secure-video-streaming) — Secure video streaming is delivering video so that only authorized viewers can watch it and copies are hard to make. It is achieved by combining several layers: encrypted delivery, access tokens, DRM, account controls and watermarking.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does my screen recording of a streaming app show a black screen?

The video is protected by hardware-level DRM, which keeps decrypted frames out of reach of the recording software.

### Can screen recording be blocked in a web browser?

Only partly. It depends on the browser, operating system and hardware. Where protection is software-only, services restrict the resolution instead.

### Does blocking screenshots require DRM?

Reliable blocking does. Apps can ask the operating system to hide their window from capture, but that is easier to defeat than a protected video path.
