# What is regional pricing?

Regional pricing is charging different prices for the same streaming plan in different groups of countries. Countries with similar purchasing power are placed in a band, and each band has one price.

## How regional pricing works

Instead of setting a price for every country, the service defines a small number of bands, for example four, and assigns each country to one. The viewer's country decides which band's price they see.

## Building the bands

- Rank countries by purchasing power and by what competing services charge there
- Group them into three to five bands
- Set a price per band, starting from your base price and scaling down
- Price your largest markets individually if they deserve it
- Show each price in a local currency where your payment provider supports it

## Regional vs localized pricing

The terms overlap. Localized pricing means a price tuned to a single market, in its currency and with natural price points. Regional pricing is the coarser version, with one price shared across a group of markets. Most services start with regions and localize their biggest countries later.

## Enforcement

A viewer in an expensive region may try to buy at a cheaper region's price. Check the country of the payment method as well as the IP address, and block known VPN ranges where your licenses require it.

Regional pricing, payments and tax are included on every RentAnOTT plan. The localized pricing calculator suggests a price per market from your base price. [Try the pricing calculator](https://www.rentanott.com/tools/localized-pricing-calculator).

- [Localized pricing](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/localized-pricing) — Localized pricing is setting a different price for the same streaming plan in each country, in the local currency and at a level that matches local incomes and competing services, instead of converting one global price at the exchange rate.
- [PPP pricing](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/ppp-pricing) — PPP (purchasing power parity) pricing is a way of setting country prices by scaling a base price according to how far money goes in each country, so that a plan feels equally affordable everywhere rather than costing the same amount in dollars.
- [Multi-currency billing](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/multi-currency-billing) — Multi-currency billing is charging customers in their local currency instead of a single currency for everyone. The price is shown, charged and receipted in that currency, and the business receives the funds either in the same currency or converted to its own.
- [Geo-blocking](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/geo-blocking) — Geo-blocking is restricting access to video according to the viewer's location, so that a title can only be played in the countries or regions where the service holds the rights to show it.
- [Payment gateway](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/payment-gateway) — A payment gateway is the service that securely collects a customer's payment details, sends the transaction to the banks and card networks for approval, and reports the result back to the business. A streaming service uses one to sell subscriptions, rentals and purchases on the web.
- [Subscription tier](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/subscription-tier) — A subscription tier is one of the plans a streaming service offers at a given price. Tiers differ in what the subscriber gets, such as video quality, simultaneous streams, downloads, the catalog included or whether ads are shown.
- [ARPU](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/arpu) — ARPU (average revenue per user) is a service's total revenue in a period divided by the number of users in that period. It shows how much each user is worth on average, across subscriptions, advertising and one-time sales.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many price regions should I have?

Three to five covers most of the benefit. More bands add precision but also more to maintain and explain.

### Do app stores support regional pricing?

Yes. Apple and Google let you set a price per country, and offer price tiers that convert a base price automatically, which you can override.

### What happens when a subscriber moves country?

Most services keep the existing price until the subscription is changed or renewed with a payment method from the new country.
