# What is quality of experience (QoE)?

Quality of experience (QoE) is the measure of how well video playback works from the viewer's point of view. It is tracked through a small set of metrics collected by the player: how quickly video starts, how often it stalls, how often it fails and what picture quality is delivered.

## The core QoE metrics

- Video start time: seconds from pressing play to the first frame
- Rebuffering ratio: time spent stalled as a share of time spent watching
- Start failures: plays that never begin
- Playback failures: sessions that end in an error
- Average bitrate and resolution delivered
- Quality switches: how often the picture steps up or down

## QoE vs QoS

Quality of service (QoS) describes the network and infrastructure: throughput, latency, error rates, server response. Quality of experience describes the result for the person watching. Good QoS usually produces good QoE, but the two can diverge: every server can be healthy while a player bug ruins playback on one device model.

## Why it matters

Playback problems cost viewing, and viewing drives both advertising revenue and renewals. Slow starts lose viewers before the first frame. Stalls end sessions. A subscriber who meets errors repeatedly cancels and tells others why.

## Using QoE data

- Break every metric down by device, app version, region, network and CDN
- Look at the worst-served viewers, not only the average
- Compare before and after each app release and encoding change
- Set alerts for sudden rises in failures during live events
- Relate QoE to retention: which problems precede cancellations

## Related terms

- [Buffering](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/buffering) — Buffering is the interruption that occurs when a video player runs out of downloaded video and has to pause, usually showing a spinner, until more arrives. The technical term for a pause after playback has started is rebuffering.
- [Video analytics](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/video-analytics) — Video analytics is the measurement of how a streaming service is used and how it performs: who the viewers are, what they watch and for how long, what revenue results and how reliably the video plays.
- [Adaptive bitrate streaming](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/adaptive-bitrate-streaming) — Adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR) is a delivery method in which a video is encoded at several quality levels and the player switches between them during playback, choosing the highest quality the viewer's connection can sustain without stalling.
- [CDN](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/cdn) — A CDN (content delivery network) is a network of servers spread across many locations that stores copies of content and delivers each request from a server near the viewer. For streaming, it is what carries the video segments from the platform to the audience.
- [Video player](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/video-player) — A video player is the software on a viewer's device that requests a stream, decodes it and displays it, and provides the controls for watching. In a streaming service it also handles adaptive quality, DRM, subtitles, advertising and analytics.
- [SLA](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/sla) — An SLA (service-level agreement) is the part of a contract in which a vendor commits to measurable levels of service, such as uptime and support response times, and states what the customer receives if those levels are missed.
- [Multi-CDN](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/multi-cdn) — Multi-CDN is the practice of delivering video through two or more content delivery networks at once, with a switching layer that sends each viewer, or each request, to whichever network is performing best for them at that moment.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does QoE stand for?

QoE stands for quality of experience.

### Which QoE metric matters most?

Rebuffering and failures do the most damage, since they stop viewing. Start time is next. Resolution matters least, within reason.

### How is QoE measured?

By the player itself, which reports events such as start, stall, quality change and error from each real viewing session.
