# What is PPP pricing?

PPP (purchasing power parity) pricing is a way of setting country prices by scaling a base price according to how far money goes in each country, so that a plan feels equally affordable everywhere rather than costing the same amount in dollars.

## How PPP pricing is calculated

Purchasing power parity compares what a basket of goods costs in different countries. Dividing a country's PPP conversion factor by its market exchange rate gives a ratio, sometimes called the price level, that shows how much cheaper or more expensive life is there than in the base country.

Multiply the base price by that ratio to get the adjusted price. If a plan is $10 in the United States and a country's price level is 0.35, the PPP-adjusted price is about $3.50, charged in local currency.

## Why use PPP instead of the exchange rate

Exchange rates reflect trade and capital flows, not household budgets. A price converted at the exchange rate can equal a day's wages in one market and a few minutes' in another. PPP gives a starting point grounded in what people can afford.

## Limits of PPP pricing

Treat the PPP figure as a first estimate, then adjust for competitors, set a floor that covers your cost per viewer and round to a natural local price.

- It is an average across all goods, not a measure of willingness to pay for streaming
- Local competitors may price well above or below the PPP figure
- A raw PPP price rarely lands on a tidy local price point
- Your costs, such as delivery and app store commission, do not fall with local incomes

- [Localized pricing](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/localized-pricing) — Localized pricing is setting a different price for the same streaming plan in each country, in the local currency and at a level that matches local incomes and competing services, instead of converting one global price at the exchange rate.
- [Regional pricing](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/regional-pricing) — Regional pricing is charging different prices for the same streaming plan in different groups of countries. Countries with similar purchasing power are placed in a band, and each band has one price.

The price is shown, charged and receipted in that currency, and the business receives the funds either in the same currency or converted to its own.
- [ARPU](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/arpu) — ARPU (average revenue per user) is a service's total revenue in a period divided by the number of users in that period. It shows how much each user is worth on average, across subscriptions, advertising and one-time sales.
- [Subscription tier](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/subscription-tier) — A subscription tier is one of the plans a streaming service offers at a given price. Tiers differ in what the subscriber gets, such as video quality, simultaneous streams, downloads, the catalog included or whether ads are shown.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does PPP stand for?

PPP stands for purchasing power parity.

### Where does PPP data come from?

The World Bank and the IMF publish PPP conversion factors by country, updated yearly. Divide the factor by the market exchange rate to get the adjustment ratio.

### Should every country get its own PPP price?

Not necessarily. Many services group countries into a few bands with one price each, which is easier to manage and explain than a separate price for every market.
