# What is playout?

Playout is the process, and the system, that turns a schedule into a continuous channel. It plays each program, live feed, promotion and ad break in order, around the clock, and outputs a single stream ready for delivery.

## How playout works

A scheduler holds the running order: what plays, when and for how long. The playout engine follows it, switching between recorded files and live inputs, overlaying graphics such as a channel logo or a now-and-next caption, and inserting markers where ad breaks fall.

The output is a live stream. From there it is encoded and delivered exactly as a live event would be.

## Cloud playout

Playout used to mean racks of dedicated hardware in a broadcast facility. Cloud playout runs the same function as software, drawing programs straight from the on-demand library. A channel can be created in hours, run for a weekend and switched off, which has made pop-up and themed channels practical for services that are not broadcasters.

## What a playout system needs to do

- Schedule days or weeks ahead, with loops and automatic fill for gaps
- Mix recorded programs with live inputs
- Insert ad-break markers that downstream ad systems can read
- Add logos, captions and emergency slates
- Produce a program guide feed that matches what is on air
- Fail over to a backup if an input or the engine stops

## Related terms

- [Linear channel](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/linear-channel) — A linear channel is a continuous stream of programs played in a fixed schedule, like a traditional television channel. Viewers join whatever is on at that moment rather than choosing a title to start.
- [FAST channel](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/fast-channel) — A FAST channel (free ad-supported streaming television) is a linear channel delivered over the internet that viewers watch for free, with advertising in scheduled breaks. It looks and behaves like a television channel but needs no subscription or aerial.
- [EPG](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/epg) — An EPG (electronic program guide) is the on-screen schedule for linear channels. It shows what is playing now and what is coming up on each channel, usually as a grid of channels against time, and lets the viewer tune to a program from it.
- [Live streaming](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/live-streaming) — Live streaming is delivering video over the internet as it is captured, so that viewers watch an event while it is happening, with a delay of a few seconds rather than after a recording has been uploaded.
- [Live encoder](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/live-encoder) — A live encoder is the hardware or software that takes a live video feed from a camera or production mixer, compresses it in real time and sends it over the internet to a streaming platform, most often using RTMP or SRT.
- [Catch-up TV](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/catch-up-tv) — Catch-up TV is a service that makes programs available on demand for a limited period after they were shown on a linear channel, commonly 7 to 30 days. It lets viewers watch what they missed without recording it.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is playout the same as live streaming?

No. Playout creates the channel by sequencing content. Live streaming delivers the resulting stream to viewers. A channel needs both.

### Can a channel be made entirely from recorded content?

Yes. Many free ad-supported channels have no live production at all; playout simply runs a schedule of library titles.

### What happens if a scheduled file is missing?

A good playout system plays a filler item or a holding slate and alerts an operator, so the channel never goes black.
