# What is peak concurrency?

Peak concurrency is the highest number of viewers watching a service at the same moment within a period, such as a day, an event or a month. It is the figure that capacity, and many platform plans, are sized against.

## Estimating peak concurrency

Use your own history where you have it. For a first live event, plan for most buyers watching at once and add headroom.

- On-demand: a small share of monthly active users, commonly a few percent, at the busiest point of an evening
- A major release: several times the normal evening peak for the first days
- Live event: a large share of ticket holders or interested subscribers, arriving within minutes
- Linear channel: follows the schedule, peaking with the most popular programs

## What the peak determines

Peak delivery rate is peak concurrency multiplied by average bitrate: 5,000 viewers at 4 Mbps is 20 Gbps. A CDN absorbs that, but the systems behind it, sign-in, entitlement checks, DRM licensing and payment, also have to handle everyone arriving together.

The steepness of the arrival matters as much as the height. Ten thousand viewers joining over an hour is easy; the same number in two minutes is a stress test.

## Planning for it

- Check the concurrent-stream allowance of your plan before an event, not during
- Tell your platform vendor about large events in advance
- Open a pre-show early to spread arrivals
- Keep purchase and sign-in paths as light as possible at start time

## Peak concurrency on RentAnOTT

RentAnOTT tiers include 1,000 peak concurrent streams on Launch and 5,000 on Growth, with custom concurrency on Scale. Live channels on Growth include 2,000 concurrent viewers. [See pricing](https://www.rentanott.com/pricing).

## Related terms

- [Concurrent viewers](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/concurrent-viewers) — Concurrent viewers is the number of people watching a service's video at the same moment. The highest value reached, peak concurrency, determines how much streaming capacity the service needs.
- [MAU](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/mau) — MAU (monthly active users) is the number of unique users who were active on a service at least once during a month. On a streaming service, active usually means signing in or starting playback.
- [Live event](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/live-event) — A live event is a single scheduled stream with a defined start and end, such as a match, a concert, a conference or a premiere. Unlike a linear channel it does not run continuously, and unlike on-demand video everyone watches it at the same time.
- [Bandwidth](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/bandwidth) — Bandwidth is the maximum rate at which data can be transferred over a connection, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). In streaming the word is also used for the total volume of video delivered to viewers in a month, measured in gigabytes or terabytes.
- [Auto-scaling](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/auto-scaling) — Auto-scaling is the automatic adjustment of computing capacity to match demand. When load rises, more servers are started; when it falls, they are shut down. For a streaming service it is what keeps sign-in, playback and payment working through an evening peak or a live event.
- [CDN](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/cdn) — A CDN (content delivery network) is a network of servers spread across many locations that stores copies of content and delivers each request from a server near the viewer. For streaming, it is what carries the video segments from the platform to the audience.
- [Live pay-per-view](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/live-ppv) — Live pay-per-view is selling access to a single live stream for a one-time ticket price. The buyer can watch that event as it happens and usually a replay for a limited time afterward.
- [Concurrent stream limit](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/concurrent-stream-limit) — A concurrent stream limit is the maximum number of devices that can play video on one account at the same moment. When the limit is reached, a further device is refused or an existing stream is stopped.

## Frequently asked questions

### How is peak concurrency different from concurrent viewers?

Concurrent viewers is the count at any moment. Peak concurrency is the highest that count reached in the period.

### What happens if a service exceeds its concurrency limit?

That depends on the platform: new viewers may be refused, or the overage may be billed. On RentAnOTT a service that outgrows its tier moves up a tier or to a dedicated stack.

### Does on-demand viewing have a peak?

Yes, usually on weekend evenings, though it is far flatter than the spike of a live event.
