# What is password sharing?

Password sharing is the use of one streaming account by people who are not part of the subscriber's household, so that several households watch on a single subscription. It ranges from a family member in another city to credentials sold or posted publicly.

## Kinds of sharing

The first two are potential customers. The third is fraud and should be shut off.

- Casual: family and friends given the login
- Split-cost: a group that deliberately shares one subscription
- Commercial: stolen or resold credentials used by strangers

## How it is detected

- More devices on an account than a household would have
- Sign-ins from distant locations within a short time
- Streams running simultaneously on different networks
- A primary location, such as a home network, that some devices never join
- Viewing patterns that look like several unrelated people

## Ways to limit it

- Concurrent stream limits: the simplest and least intrusive control
- Device limits, with a cap on how often devices are swapped
- Verification by email or text when a new device signs in
- A paid extra-member option that makes sharing legitimate
- Cheaper individual or ad-supported plans, so the person borrowing has an affordable alternative
- Forced sign-out and password reset on accounts that are clearly compromised

## The trade-off

Enforcement can convert sharers into subscribers, and it can also annoy legitimate users: students away from home, people who travel, families split across two addresses. Start with limits that only affect heavy sharing, give a clear way to resolve a block, and watch cancellations after any change.

## Password sharing on RentAnOTT

RentAnOTT provides device limits and concurrent-stream caps as part of controlled access, with devices and sessions visible per user in the CMS. [See security features](https://www.rentanott.com/features#security).

- [Concurrent stream limit](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/concurrent-stream-limit) — A concurrent stream limit is the maximum number of devices that can play video on one account at the same moment. When the limit is reached, a further device is refused or an existing stream is stopped.
- [Device limit](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/device-limit) — A device limit is the maximum number of devices that can be signed in or registered to a single streaming account. When the limit is reached, the viewer must remove a device before adding another.
- [Subscription tier](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/subscription-tier) — A subscription tier is one of the plans a streaming service offers at a given price. Tiers differ in what the subscriber gets, such as video quality, simultaneous streams, downloads, the catalog included or whether ads are shown.
- [Video piracy](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/video-piracy) — Video piracy is the copying, distribution or restreaming of video without the permission of its rights holder. For a streaming service it means paying audiences watching for free elsewhere, and it can put content licenses at risk.
- [Secure video streaming](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/secure-video-streaming) — Secure video streaming is delivering video so that only authorized viewers can watch it and copies are hard to make. It is achieved by combining several layers: encrypted delivery, access tokens, DRM, account controls and watermarking.
- [Ad-supported tier](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/ad-supported-tier) — An ad-supported tier is a plan on a streaming service that is free or priced below the standard plan because the viewer watches advertising. The service earns from the advertiser as well as, or instead of, the viewer.
- [Churn rate](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/churn-rate) — Churn rate is the percentage of a streaming service's subscribers who cancel or fail to renew during a period, usually a month. It is the main measure of how well a subscription service keeps its customers.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is password sharing illegal?

It usually breaks the service's terms of use. Whether it breaks the law depends on the country and the circumstances; selling access to others is treated far more seriously than lending a login to family.

### Should a small service worry about password sharing?

A stream limit per plan is worth having from the start. Heavier measures matter once sharing is visibly holding back subscriber growth.

### Do profiles encourage sharing?

Profiles are meant for one household. Combined with stream and device limits they serve families well without making an account easy to spread further.
