# What is Multi-CDN?

Multi-CDN is the practice of delivering video through two or more content delivery networks at once, with a switching layer that sends each viewer, or each request, to whichever network is performing best for them at that moment.

## How multi-CDN works

Decisions are driven by measurements: synthetic tests, real-user data from players, or both.

- DNS-based switching: the stream's hostname resolves to different CDNs according to region or measured performance
- Manifest-based switching: the manifest lists more than one CDN, and the player chooses or is told which to use
- Mid-stream switching: the player moves to another CDN during playback if segments slow down or fail

## Why services use it

- Resilience: an outage or congestion on one network does not take the service down
- Regional performance: no CDN is the fastest everywhere
- Capacity: very large live events can exceed what one network will commit to
- Commercial leverage: traffic can be shifted toward the better price

## What it costs

Each CDN must be configured identically for caching, tokens and geo rules, and kept that way. Traffic split between networks earns smaller volume discounts on each, and each must fill its own cache from the origin. The switching layer itself is another system to buy or build and to monitor.

## Who needs it

Services with large live audiences, viewers spread across many regions, or contractual uptime commitments. A small or regional on-demand service is well served by a single good CDN, and gains more from tuning its bitrate ladder than from adding a second network.

## Multi-CDN on RentAnOTT

CDN delivery is included in every RentAnOTT tier, at 1 TB, 5 TB or 20 TB a month, with more at $7.50 per TB. Scale customers with specific delivery requirements can discuss a dedicated stack. [Estimate your delivery cost](https://www.rentanott.com/tools/streaming-bandwidth-cost-calculator).

## Related terms

- [CDN](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/cdn) — A CDN (content delivery network) is a network of servers spread across many locations that stores copies of content and delivers each request from a server near the viewer. For streaming, it is what carries the video segments from the platform to the audience.
- [Egress cost](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/egress-cost) — Egress cost is the charge for data leaving a cloud provider's or CDN's network, billed per gigabyte transferred. For a streaming service it is the cost of delivering video to viewers, and it is usually the largest variable cost of the service.
- [Bandwidth](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/bandwidth) — Bandwidth is the maximum rate at which data can be transferred over a connection, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). In streaming the word is also used for the total volume of video delivered to viewers in a month, measured in gigabytes or terabytes.
- [SLA](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/sla) — An SLA (service-level agreement) is the part of a contract in which a vendor commits to measurable levels of service, such as uptime and support response times, and states what the customer receives if those levels are missed.
- [Peak concurrency](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/peak-concurrency) — Peak concurrency is the highest number of viewers watching a service at the same moment within a period, such as a day, an event or a month. It is the figure that capacity, and many platform plans, are sized against.
- [Quality of experience](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/quality-of-experience) — Quality of experience (QoE) is the measure of how well video playback works from the viewer's point of view. It is tracked through a small set of metrics collected by the player: how quickly video starts, how often it stalls, how often it fails and what picture quality is delivered.
- [Auto-scaling](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/auto-scaling) — Auto-scaling is the automatic adjustment of computing capacity to match demand. When load rises, more servers are started; when it falls, they are shut down. For a streaming service it is what keeps sign-in, playback and payment working through an evening peak or a live event.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does multi-CDN lower delivery cost?

It can, by routing to the cheaper network where quality is equal, but split volumes reduce discounts and the switching layer adds cost. Reliability is the stronger reason.

### Do signed URLs work across several CDNs?

Yes, but each CDN has its own token format, so the service must issue a valid token for whichever network the viewer is sent to.

### Can a player switch CDN during playback?

Yes, if the player and manifest are set up for it. This protects viewers already watching when one network degrades.
