# What is a managed OTT platform (OTT SaaS)?

A managed OTT platform, also called OTT SaaS, is streaming software that the vendor hosts, operates and updates on your behalf for a recurring fee. You run the content and the business; the vendor runs the technology.

## How managed OTT works

You sign up for a plan, brand the service and upload your catalog. The vendor provides hosting, encoding, delivery, security, app updates and monitoring. New features and fixes arrive without work on your side.

## What the vendor takes on

- Infrastructure that scales with demand
- Uptime, monitoring, backups and disaster recovery
- Security patches and DRM integrations
- Keeping each app compatible as device platforms change
- Store submissions and resubmissions

## Managed vs self-hosted

With a self-hosted license you pay once for the software, then pay separately for hosting, delivery and the engineers who maintain it. You gain control and, often, the source code.

With a managed platform you pay monthly and need no engineering team. You give up the ability to modify the code. For most content owners the managed route costs less in total and launches sooner; self-hosting suits organizations that must own the code or host on their own premises.

## How managed platforms charge

- A flat tier by audience size
- A fee per subscriber
- A share of revenue
- Usage, such as delivery and storage above an allowance

- [OTT platform](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/ott-platform) — An OTT platform is the software and infrastructure a business uses to run its own streaming service. It covers content management, encoding, delivery, the video player, subscriptions and payments, apps and analytics.
- [White-label OTT](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/white-label-ott) — A white-label OTT platform is ready-made streaming technology that a business launches under its own name, logo and domain. The vendor builds and operates the software; viewers see only the business's brand.
- [Per-subscriber fee](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/per-subscriber-fee) — A per-subscriber fee is an amount a streaming platform vendor charges each month for every paying subscriber on your service, usually on top of a base plan. The total grows in step with your audience.
- [SLA](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/sla) — An SLA (service-level agreement) is the part of a contract in which a vendor commits to measurable levels of service, such as uptime and support response times, and states what the customer receives if those levels are missed.
- [Auto-scaling](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/auto-scaling) — Auto-scaling is the automatic adjustment of computing capacity to match demand. When load rises, more servers are started; when it falls, they are shut down. For a streaming service it is what keeps sign-in, playback and payment working through an evening peak or a live event.
- [IPTV middleware](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/iptv-middleware) — IPTV middleware is the software layer that sits between an operator's video systems and its subscribers' devices. ## Frequently asked questions

### What does OTT SaaS mean?

SaaS is software as a service: software rented and run by its vendor rather than installed by the customer. OTT SaaS is a streaming platform delivered that way.

### Do I own my data on a managed platform?

You should. Check that the contract states you own your content and subscriber data and can export both.

### Can a managed platform handle a large audience?

Yes. Managed platforms run on cloud infrastructure that scales with demand. Larger services typically move to a higher tier or a dedicated stack with an SLA.
