# What is IPTV middleware?

IPTV middleware is the software layer that sits between an operator's video systems and its subscribers' devices. It manages accounts, channel packages, the program guide, on-demand content, billing integration and set-top boxes.

## What IPTV middleware does

- Subscriber management: accounts, packages and entitlements
- Channel line-up and electronic program guide
- On-demand catalog, catch-up and recording features
- Device management: provisioning and updating set-top boxes and apps
- Integration with billing, conditional access or DRM, and the operator's other systems
- The interface the subscriber sees on screen

## Who uses it

Middleware is built for operators: telecom companies, internet providers, hotels and hospitals that distribute many channels to a known set of subscribers and devices. It is typically bought as one component and combined with separate transcoding, storage and delivery systems.

## Middleware vs a managed OTT platform

Middleware assumes you are assembling and running a system. You choose and integrate the other components and operate the result. That suits an operator with engineers and existing infrastructure.

A managed OTT platform delivers the whole service as one product, with encoding, delivery, apps and monetization included and operated for you. That suits a content owner who wants a branded service rather than an operator's stack.

## IPTV middleware on RentAnOTT

RentAnOTT is a managed, branded streaming service for content owners, not operator middleware: website, CMS, apps, live channels and on-demand video in one monthly plan. [Compare the approaches](https://www.rentanott.com/setplex-alternative).

## Related terms

- [IPTV](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/iptv) — IPTV (internet protocol television) is the delivery of television channels and on-demand video using internet protocol. In its original sense it runs over a telecom operator's own managed network to a set-top box, rather than over the open internet.
- [Managed OTT](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/managed-ott) — A managed OTT platform, also called OTT SaaS, is streaming software that the vendor hosts, operates and updates on your behalf for a recurring fee. You run the content and the business; the vendor runs the technology.
- [OTT platform](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/ott-platform) — An OTT platform is the software and infrastructure a business uses to run its own streaming service. It covers content management, encoding, delivery, the video player, subscriptions and payments, apps and analytics.
- [EPG](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/epg) — An EPG (electronic program guide) is the on-screen schedule for linear channels. It shows what is playing now and what is coming up on each channel, usually as a grid of channels against time, and lets the viewer tune to a program from it.
- [Set-top box](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/set-top-box) — A set-top box (STB) is a device that connects to a television and supplies it with video from a source the television cannot receive by itself, such as a cable, satellite or IPTV service, or streaming apps over the internet.
- [Linear channel](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/linear-channel) — A linear channel is a continuous stream of programs played in a fixed schedule, like a traditional television channel. Viewers join whatever is on at that moment rather than choosing a title to start.
- [Self-hosted OTT](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/self-hosted-ott) — A self-hosted OTT platform is streaming software that you license, usually for a one-time fee and sometimes with source code, and then install and operate on your own cloud account or on-premise servers.
- [Video CMS](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/video-cms) — A video CMS (content management system) is the back-office application where a streaming team uploads video, adds metadata and artwork, organizes titles into a catalog, sets who can watch and at what price, and publishes to the website and apps.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is IPTV middleware the same as an OTT platform?

They overlap. Middleware is one component, centered on subscribers, channels and devices, that an operator integrates with other systems. An OTT platform is a complete service including video processing, delivery, apps and payments.

### Do I need middleware to stream live channels?

Not if you use a managed platform that supports live channels. Middleware is needed when you are building an operator-style system from separate parts.

### Does middleware include the video player and apps?

Most products ship client apps for set-top boxes and common devices. Encoding, storage and the delivery network are usually separate purchases.
