# What is hybrid monetization?

Hybrid monetization is the practice of running more than one revenue model on a single streaming service, such as subscriptions, advertising, rentals, purchases and in-app currency, so that each viewer can pay in the way they prefer.

## How hybrid monetization works

Each title, plan and viewer is assigned rules: which tier includes the title, whether ads play, and whether it is also sold on its own. The platform applies those rules at playback, so the same catalog behaves differently for a free viewer, a subscriber and a renter.

## Common combinations

- Free with ads, plus a paid ad-free subscription
- Subscription for the catalog, plus rentals for new releases
- Subscription, plus pay-per-view tickets for live events
- Free first episodes, then coins or a pass to unlock the rest of a series

## A release path across models

Hybrid services often move one title through several models over time: a premium rental first, then the subscription catalog, then a free ad-supported tier. Each step reaches a larger and more price-sensitive audience than the one before.

Measure the result per viewer rather than per model. Total revenue divided by active viewers shows whether a new tier added income or only moved it.

## Hybrid monetization on RentAnOTT

Every RentAnOTT plan includes AVOD, SVOD and TVOD on one catalog. Coins and virtual purchases ($119/month) and PVOD premieres ($59/month) are optional add-ons. [See pricing](https://www.rentanott.com/pricing).

- [Ad-supported tier](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/ad-supported-tier) — An ad-supported tier is a plan on a streaming service that is free or priced below the standard plan because the viewer watches advertising. The service earns from the advertiser as well as, or instead of, the viewer.
- [Coins and virtual currency](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/virtual-currency) — Coins, or virtual currency, are units of in-app credit that viewers buy in packs with real money and then spend inside a streaming app, most often to unlock individual episodes of a short-form series.
- [Release window](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/release-window) — A release window is a period during which a title is available through one distribution channel or business model before it moves to the next. Windowing is the practice of ordering those periods so that each audience pays the most it is willing to.
- [ARPU](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/arpu) — ARPU (average revenue per user) is a service's total revenue in a period divided by the number of users in that period. It shows how much each user is worth on average, across subscriptions, advertising and one-time sales.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is hybrid monetization the same as HVOD?

Nearly. HVOD usually describes a subscription combined with advertising. Hybrid monetization is the broader idea and also covers rentals, purchases, live tickets and in-app currency.

### Which model should a new service start with?

Start with the one that matches how your audience already pays for similar content, then add a second once you can see who is not converting. A platform that includes every model lets you add one without rebuilding.

### Does a free tier hurt subscriptions?

Not if the two are clearly different. Keep the newest or most valuable titles in the paid tier and use the free tier to reach people who would otherwise not watch at all.
