# What is geo-blocking?

Geo-blocking is restricting access to video according to the viewer's location, so that a title can only be played in the countries or regions where the service holds the rights to show it.

## How geo-blocking works

The service looks up the viewer's IP address in a geolocation database to find their country. It compares the result with the territories allowed for that title, plan or the whole service, and either starts playback or shows a message that the content is unavailable.

## Why services geo-block

- Licensing: rights are sold country by country, and the license forbids showing a title elsewhere
- Sports blackouts: a match may be restricted in the region where it is broadcast locally
- Regulation: some content is not permitted in some markets
- Commercial rollout: launching in one market at a time, with different pricing in each

## Where the rule is enforced

A rule applied only in the app's interface is easy to get around. Strong geo-blocking checks location when the playback token or DRM license is issued, and again at the CDN, so that a stream address copied from an allowed country does not play in a blocked one.

VPNs and proxies hide the viewer's real location. Geolocation providers keep lists of known VPN and data-center addresses, and rights holders often require a service to block them.

## Geo-blocking on RentAnOTT

Geo rules are part of controlled access on RentAnOTT, alongside signed URLs, tokenized playback, device limits and concurrent-stream caps. Availability windows and regions are set per title in the CMS. [See security features](https://www.rentanott.com/features#security).

## Related terms

- [Territorial rights](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/territorial-rights) — Territorial rights are the rights to distribute a title in a particular country or region. A license names the territories it covers, and the streaming service may show the title only to viewers located there.
- [Signed URL](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/signed-url) — A signed URL is a web address for a video stream that includes a cryptographic signature and an expiry time. The CDN serves the content only if the signature is valid and the link has not expired, so a copied or shared link stops working. Using signed URLs for playback is called tokenized playback.
- [Content licensing](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/content-licensing) — Content licensing is the agreement by which the owner of a film, series or event grants a streaming service the right to show it, for a set period, in set territories, under set business models, in exchange for payment.
- [DRM](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/drm) — DRM (digital rights management) is technology that encrypts video and controls who can decrypt it. A viewer's device must obtain a license from a license server before it can play the stream, and the license sets the rules for that playback.
- [Secure video streaming](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/secure-video-streaming) — Secure video streaming is delivering video so that only authorized viewers can watch it and copies are hard to make. It is achieved by combining several layers: encrypted delivery, access tokens, DRM, account controls and watermarking.
- [Localized pricing](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/localized-pricing) — Localized pricing is setting a different price for the same streaming plan in each country, in the local currency and at a level that matches local incomes and competing services, instead of converting one global price at the exchange rate.
- [Release window](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/release-window) — A release window is a period during which a title is available through one distribution channel or business model before it moves to the next. Windowing is the practice of ordering those periods so that each audience pays the most it is willing to.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is geo-blocking the same as geo-fencing?

They are used interchangeably in streaming. Geo-fencing sometimes refers to finer boundaries, such as a city or a venue, where geo-blocking usually means whole countries.

### Can geo-blocking be applied to single titles?

Yes. Rights are usually licensed per title and per territory, so a catalog often looks different in each country even though the service is the same.

### What happens to a subscriber who travels?

That depends on your licenses. Many services show the catalog of the country the viewer is in. Downloads made before traveling usually keep playing until their license expires.
