# What is a free trial in streaming?

A free trial is a limited period, commonly 7, 14 or 30 days, during which a new subscriber has full access to a streaming service before being charged. When it ends, the subscription starts automatically unless the viewer cancels.

## How a free trial works

The viewer chooses a plan and, in most cases, enters payment details. Access begins immediately. On the last day of the trial the first payment is taken and regular billing begins.

## Design choices

- Card up front: fewer sign-ups, but most of them convert
- No card: many more sign-ups, far fewer of them pay
- Length: long enough to form a habit, short enough that the catalog is not exhausted
- Reminder: an email before the first charge reduces refunds and disputes, and some regions require it
- Alternatives: a discounted first month, or a free first episode with no trial at all

## Preventing trial abuse

Some viewers take repeated trials with new email addresses, or sign up, watch one series and cancel. Limit trials to one per payment method and device, and consider leaving trials off around a major release, when people would have subscribed anyway.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long should a streaming free trial be?

Seven days is the most common. Use longer if your content takes time to appreciate, shorter if a viewer could finish what they came for within the trial.

### Should a free trial require a credit card?

Requiring one gives fewer but better trials and automatic conversion. Not requiring one suits a service that mainly wants reach. Test both if you can.

### Do app stores support free trials?

Yes. Apple and Google both offer introductory free periods for subscriptions bought through their billing, configured in the store.
