# What is forensic watermarking?

Forensic watermarking embeds an invisible identifier, unique to each viewer or session, into the video itself. If a copy appears on a piracy site, the identifier can be extracted to find the account it came from.

## How forensic watermarking works

A mark is inserted into the picture in a way the eye cannot see but software can read. Every session gets a different mark. The mark is designed to survive re-encoding, cropping, resizing and filming the screen with a camera.

When a leak is found, the service or its anti-piracy partner extracts the mark, matches it to a session and can suspend the account, end the stream or pursue the source.

## Watermarking methods

- Server-side (A/B) watermarking: two marked variants of each segment are prepared, and each viewer receives a unique sequence of them
- Client-side watermarking: the player draws the mark on the device during playback
- Visible watermarking: an on-screen ID or email address, used as a deterrent on screeners and previews

## Forensic watermarking vs DRM

DRM prevents unauthorized playback and copying of the stream. It cannot stop someone pointing a camera at a screen or capturing output from a compromised device. Watermarking does not prevent that either, but it identifies who did it. The two are used together.

## When it is required

Rights holders commonly require forensic watermarking for 4K and HDR films, early-window and pre-release titles, and live sport. For a back catalog or lower-value content, DRM alone normally satisfies the license.

## Forensic watermarking on RentAnOTT

Forensic watermarking is a RentAnOTT add-on from $229/month, with session-aware marking for high-value and pre-release content. It works alongside the multi-DRM on Growth and Scale. [See pricing](https://www.rentanott.com/pricing).

## Related terms

- [DRM](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/drm) — DRM (digital rights management) is technology that encrypts video and controls who can decrypt it. A viewer's device must obtain a license from a license server before it can play the stream, and the license sets the rules for that playback.
- [Multi-DRM](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/multi-drm) — Multi-DRM is the use of several DRM systems, normally Widevine, FairPlay and PlayReady, to protect the same video so that it plays securely on every browser, phone and television.
- [Video piracy](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/video-piracy) — Video piracy is the copying, distribution or restreaming of video without the permission of its rights holder. For a streaming service it means paying audiences watching for free elsewhere, and it can put content licenses at risk.
- [Screen-recording protection](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/screen-recording-protection) — Screen-recording protection is the set of measures that prevent or deter viewers from capturing video with screenshots or screen-recording software. Its core is hardware-level DRM, which makes protected video appear black in a capture.
- [Secure video streaming](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/secure-video-streaming) — Secure video streaming is delivering video so that only authorized viewers can watch it and copies are hard to make. It is achieved by combining several layers: encrypted delivery, access tokens, DRM, account controls and watermarking.
- [PVOD](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/pvod) — PVOD (premium video on demand) is a one-time rental or purchase of a new release at a premium price, offered early, while or shortly after the title is in cinemas and before it reaches subscription or ad-supported catalogs.
- [Live event](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/live-event) — A live event is a single scheduled stream with a defined start and end, such as a match, a concert, a conference or a premiere. Unlike a linear channel it does not run continuously, and unlike on-demand video everyone watches it at the same time.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can viewers see a forensic watermark?

No. It is designed to be imperceptible during normal viewing and is only detectable by extraction software.

### Does forensic watermarking stop piracy?

It does not block copying. It makes leaks traceable, which lets you shut down the source quickly and deters account holders who know that a copy leads back to them.

### How quickly can a leak be traced?

It depends on the method. Some systems need several minutes of leaked footage to read the full mark; systems built for live sport aim to identify a restream while the event is still running.
