# What is eCPM?

eCPM (effective cost per mille) is the advertising revenue a publisher actually earns per thousand impressions, across every ad source and pricing model. It converts mixed and partly unsold inventory into one comparable figure.

## How to calculate eCPM

Divide total ad revenue by the number of impressions and multiply by 1,000. A service that earned $4,200 from 600,000 impressions has an eCPM of $7.

A stricter version divides by ad opportunities, every slot that could have held an ad, instead of by ads actually shown. This is sometimes called revenue per mille (RPM) and is the truer measure of what your inventory earns.

## Why eCPM differs from CPM

For example, half your slots sold at a $12 CPM and half unfilled gives $6 per thousand opportunities.

- Fill: unsold slots earn nothing and pull the average down
- Mixed sources: direct deals at high rates and open auctions at low ones are blended
- Other pricing models: ads paid per click or per completed view are converted to a per-thousand equivalent
- Intermediaries: networks and exchanges take their share before you are paid

## Using eCPM

Because it folds price and fill together, eCPM is the figure to use when comparing ad partners, devices, regions or content types. A partner with a lower quoted CPM and near-complete fill can earn you more than one with a high CPM that fills a fraction of requests.

Use it in revenue planning too: multiply expected ad opportunities by eCPM, not by the best CPM you have been offered.

## eCPM on RentAnOTT

The revenue calculator takes a net CPM and a fill rate separately and works out AVOD revenue from both, which is the same result as planning with eCPM. [Try the revenue calculator](https://www.rentanott.com/tools/ott-revenue-calculator).

- [Fill rate](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/fill-rate) — Fill rate is the percentage of ad requests that are answered with an ad. If a service requests 1,000 ads and receives 700, its fill rate is 70%. Unfilled requests earn nothing.
- [Ad load](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/ad-load) — Ad load is the amount of advertising shown per hour of viewing, expressed either as minutes of ads per hour or as the number of ads per hour. It is the main lever an ad-supported service has over both revenue and viewer tolerance.
- [Programmatic advertising](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/programmatic-advertising) — Programmatic advertising is the automated buying and selling of ad impressions through software, in place of orders negotiated by sales teams. Each ad opportunity is offered to buyers and sold, often by auction, in the fraction of a second before the ad plays.
- [AVOD](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/avod) — AVOD (advertising-based video on demand) is a streaming model where viewers watch on-demand video for free and the service earns from the ads shown before, during or after it.
- [Ad server](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/ad-server) — An ad server is the system that decides which ad to show each time a player or stitching service asks for one, delivers the details of that ad and counts the result. For a publisher it is the control center of an advertising business.
- [CTV advertising](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/ctv-advertising) — CTV advertising is video advertising delivered inside streaming apps on connected televisions: smart TVs, streaming sticks, set-top boxes and consoles. It combines the full-screen impact of television with the targeting and measurement of digital advertising.
