# What is content licensing?

Content licensing is the agreement by which the owner of a film, series or event grants a streaming service the right to show it, for a set period, in set territories, under set business models, in exchange for payment.

## What a license defines

- Rights: which models are allowed, such as subscription, advertising, rental, purchase or downloads
- Territory: the countries where the title may be shown
- Term: the start and end dates
- Exclusivity: whether other services may carry the title at the same time
- Payment: flat fee, revenue share, minimum guarantee or a mix
- Technical requirements: DRM, resolution limits, watermarking and geo-blocking
- Reporting: what the service must tell the rights holder, and how often

## What rights holders expect of a platform

Before a deal is signed, larger licensors review how content will be protected. Typical requirements are approved multi-DRM on every device, hardware-level protection for HD and 4K, enforced territorial restrictions, limits on simultaneous streams and, for the most valuable titles, forensic watermarking.

They also expect titles to be taken down on the day the term ends, which means availability has to be scheduled, not remembered.

## Licensing vs owning

Licensed content is quick to acquire and leaves when the term ends. Original or owned content costs more to make but stays, and can itself be licensed to others. Most services combine the two.

## Content licensing on RentAnOTT

RentAnOTT supports the controls licenses call for: multi-DRM on Growth and Scale, signed URLs, geo rules, device limits, concurrent-stream caps and availability windows per title. Forensic watermarking is an add-on from $229/month. [See security features](https://www.rentanott.com/features#security).

- [Territorial rights](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/territorial-rights) — Territorial rights are the rights to distribute a title in a particular country or region. A license names the territories it covers, and the streaming service may show the title only to viewers located there.
- [Minimum guarantee](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/minimum-guarantee) — A minimum guarantee (MG) is an amount a streaming service commits to pay a rights holder for a title or catalog regardless of how it performs. It is normally an advance against revenue share: the rights holder receives further payments only once their share of earnings exceeds the guarantee.
- [Revenue share](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/revenue-share) — Revenue share is an arrangement in which income from a streaming service is split by percentage between parties, for example between a service and its platform vendor, an app store, a payment provider or the owner of the content.
- [Release window](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/release-window) — A release window is a period during which a title is available through one distribution channel or business model before it moves to the next. Windowing is the practice of ordering those periods so that each audience pays the most it is willing to.
- [Multi-DRM](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/multi-drm) — Multi-DRM is the use of several DRM systems, normally Widevine, FairPlay and PlayReady, to protect the same video so that it plays securely on every browser, phone and television.
- [Geo-blocking](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/geo-blocking) — Geo-blocking is restricting access to video according to the viewer's location, so that a title can only be played in the countries or regions where the service holds the rights to show it.
- [Forensic watermarking](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/forensic-watermarking) — Forensic watermarking embeds an invisible identifier, unique to each viewer or session, into the video itself. If a copy appears on a piracy site, the identifier can be extracted to find the account it came from.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need a license to stream content I bought on disc or download?

Yes. Buying a copy gives you the right to watch it privately, not to show it to the public. Streaming to an audience needs a license from the rights holder.

### What is the difference between exclusive and non-exclusive licenses?

An exclusive license makes your service the only place to watch the title in that territory and model. A non-exclusive license costs less and lets the owner license it to others too.

### Are download rights included in a streaming license?

Not automatically. Offline viewing is often a separate right, so check before enabling downloads for a title.
