# What are concurrent viewers?

Concurrent viewers is the number of people watching a service's video at the same moment. The highest value reached, peak concurrency, determines how much streaming capacity the service needs.

## How concurrency is measured

Players report regularly while they are playing. Counting the sessions that reported in the same short interval gives the number of concurrent viewers. The figure is tracked over time and the peak is recorded for each day, event or month.

## Concurrency for on-demand and live

On-demand viewing is spread across the day, so peak concurrency is a small share of the audience. As a rough guide, a few percent of monthly active users watch at the busiest moment of an ordinary evening.

Live is different. Everyone arrives for the same start time, so a large share of ticket holders or subscribers may be watching at once, and most of them join within a few minutes. Plan capacity for a live event from expected attendance, not from on-demand history.

## Why it matters

For example, 5,000 concurrent viewers at an average of 4 Mbps is 20 Gbps of delivery at that moment.

- Capacity: sign-in, entitlement and DRM license systems must absorb the peak
- Bandwidth: peak concurrency multiplied by average bitrate is the peak delivery rate
- Cost and plan limits: platforms commonly set a concurrent-stream allowance per tier
- Quality: buffering and failed starts appear first at the peak

## Concurrent viewers on RentAnOTT

RentAnOTT tiers include 1,000 peak concurrent streams on Launch and 5,000 on Growth, with custom concurrency on Scale. Live channels on Growth include 2,000 concurrent viewers. [See pricing](https://www.rentanott.com/pricing).

## Related terms

- [Peak concurrency](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/peak-concurrency) — Peak concurrency is the highest number of viewers watching a service at the same moment within a period, such as a day, an event or a month. It is the figure that capacity, and many platform plans, are sized against.
- [MAU](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/mau) — MAU (monthly active users) is the number of unique users who were active on a service at least once during a month. On a streaming service, active usually means signing in or starting playback.
- [Concurrent stream limit](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/concurrent-stream-limit) — A concurrent stream limit is the maximum number of devices that can play video on one account at the same moment. When the limit is reached, a further device is refused or an existing stream is stopped.
- [Live event](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/live-event) — A live event is a single scheduled stream with a defined start and end, such as a match, a concert, a conference or a premiere. Unlike a linear channel it does not run continuously, and unlike on-demand video everyone watches it at the same time.
- [Bandwidth](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/bandwidth) — Bandwidth is the maximum rate at which data can be transferred over a connection, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). In streaming the word is also used for the total volume of video delivered to viewers in a month, measured in gigabytes or terabytes.
- [CDN](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/cdn) — A CDN (content delivery network) is a network of servers spread across many locations that stores copies of content and delivers each request from a server near the viewer. For streaming, it is what carries the video segments from the platform to the audience.
- [Auto-scaling](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/auto-scaling) — Auto-scaling is the automatic adjustment of computing capacity to match demand. When load rises, more servers are started; when it falls, they are shut down. For a streaming service it is what keeps sign-in, playback and payment working through an evening peak or a live event.
- [Live streaming](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/live-streaming) — Live streaming is delivering video over the internet as it is captured, so that viewers watch an event while it is happening, with a delay of a few seconds rather than after a recording has been uploaded.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is concurrent viewers the same as total views?

No. Total views counts every playback over a period. Concurrent viewers counts how many were watching at one instant. A video with a million views may never have had more than a few thousand people watching together.

### How do I estimate peak concurrency for a live event?

Start from tickets sold or the subscribers likely to attend and assume most of them watch at once. Add headroom, because sales in the final hour and shared links can push the peak above the forecast.

### How is this different from a concurrent stream limit?

A concurrent stream limit caps simultaneous devices on one account. Concurrent viewers is the total across the whole service.
