# What is a concurrent stream limit?

A concurrent stream limit is the maximum number of devices that can play video on one account at the same moment. When the limit is reached, a further device is refused or an existing stream is stopped.

## How a concurrent stream limit works

Each time playback starts, the player registers a session with the service and then sends a regular heartbeat while it plays. The service counts active sessions for the account. If a new session would exceed the plan's limit, it is refused with a message naming the devices already watching.

Sessions that stop sending heartbeats expire after a short interval, so a closed app or a lost connection frees the slot.

## Concurrent stream limit vs device limit

A stream limit counts devices playing right now. A device limit counts devices registered to the account in total, whether or not they are playing. Services often use both: for example five registered devices, of which two may stream at once.

## Choosing the limit

- One stream suits a low-priced individual plan
- Two to four suits a household plan and is a common upgrade reason
- Pay-per-view tickets are normally limited to one stream, since a shared ticket is a lost sale
- Rights holders sometimes set the maximum in the license

Concurrent-stream caps and device limits are part of controlled access on RentAnOTT, managed per plan in the CMS alongside devices and sessions. [See security features](https://www.rentanott.com/features#security).

- [Device limit](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/device-limit) — A device limit is the maximum number of devices that can be signed in or registered to a single streaming account. When the limit is reached, the viewer must remove a device before adding another.
- [Password sharing](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/password-sharing) — Password sharing is the use of one streaming account by people who are not part of the subscriber's household, so that several households watch on a single subscription. It ranges from a family member in another city to credentials sold or posted publicly.
- [Subscription tier](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/subscription-tier) — A subscription tier is one of the plans a streaming service offers at a given price. Tiers differ in what the subscriber gets, such as video quality, simultaneous streams, downloads, the catalog included or whether ads are shown.
- [Concurrent viewers](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/concurrent-viewers) — Concurrent viewers is the number of people watching a service's video at the same moment. The highest value reached, peak concurrency, determines how much streaming capacity the service needs.
- [Signed URL](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/signed-url) — A signed URL is a web address for a video stream that includes a cryptographic signature and an expiry time. The CDN serves the content only if the signature is valid and the link has not expired, so a copied or shared link stops working. Using signed URLs for playback is called tokenized playback.
- [Secure video streaming](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/secure-video-streaming) — Secure video streaming is delivering video so that only authorized viewers can watch it and copies are hard to make. It is achieved by combining several layers: encrypted delivery, access tokens, DRM, account controls and watermarking.
- [Pay-per-view](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/pay-per-view) — Pay-per-view (PPV) is a model where a viewer pays once to watch a single program, most often a live event such as a fight, a match or a concert, rather than subscribing to a channel or catalog.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a concurrent stream limit the same as concurrent viewers?

No. A stream limit applies to one account. Concurrent viewers is the number of people watching across the whole service at once, which is a capacity figure.

### Does a stream limit stop password sharing?

It limits it. A shared account still works, but only for as many people as the plan allows at one time, which pushes heavy sharers toward a higher tier or a second account.

### Do downloads count toward the limit?

Usually not while playing offline, since the device cannot report a session. Services control downloads separately, by limiting the number of devices that may hold them.
