# What is auto-scaling?

Auto-scaling is the automatic adjustment of computing capacity to match demand. When load rises, more servers are started; when it falls, they are shut down. For a streaming service it is what keeps sign-in, playback and payment working through an evening peak or a live event.

## What scales in a streaming service

- Application servers: sign-in, catalog, search and entitlement checks
- Playback authorization and DRM license issuing
- Payment and checkout
- Transcoding workers, which scale with the upload queue
- Live transcoding and packaging
- Video delivery itself, which is scaled by the CDN, not by your servers

## How it works

The system watches indicators such as processor load, request rate or queue length. When one crosses a threshold, it starts more instances and adds them behind a load balancer; when demand subsides, it removes them. Databases and caches scale differently, through replicas and managed services sized with headroom.

## Its limits: the live spike

Reactive scaling takes a few minutes to bring new capacity online. A live event can send most of its audience in under that. The answer is to scale ahead of time: raise capacity before a scheduled event, keep it there until the audience has arrived, and let it fall afterward.

Any component that does not scale, such as a single database or a third-party payment service with a rate limit, becomes the bottleneck. Load testing before large events finds these.

## Why it matters commercially

Without it you either pay all month for capacity you need one evening a week, or you fail on that evening. With it, cost follows demand. On a managed platform, scaling is the vendor's responsibility and is part of what the plan buys.

## Auto-scaling on RentAnOTT

RentAnOTT runs on auto-scaling AWS infrastructure with CDN delivery, monitoring, alerting, backups and disaster recovery built in. Scale customers get custom concurrency and can add a dedicated stack. [See reliability features](https://www.rentanott.com/features#security).

## Related terms

- [Peak concurrency](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/peak-concurrency) — Peak concurrency is the highest number of viewers watching a service at the same moment within a period, such as a day, an event or a month. It is the figure that capacity, and many platform plans, are sized against.
- [Concurrent viewers](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/concurrent-viewers) — Concurrent viewers is the number of people watching a service's video at the same moment. The highest value reached, peak concurrency, determines how much streaming capacity the service needs.
- [CDN](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/cdn) — A CDN (content delivery network) is a network of servers spread across many locations that stores copies of content and delivers each request from a server near the viewer. For streaming, it is what carries the video segments from the platform to the audience.
- [Managed OTT](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/managed-ott) — A managed OTT platform, also called OTT SaaS, is streaming software that the vendor hosts, operates and updates on your behalf for a recurring fee. You run the content and the business; the vendor runs the technology.
- [SLA](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/sla) — An SLA (service-level agreement) is the part of a contract in which a vendor commits to measurable levels of service, such as uptime and support response times, and states what the customer receives if those levels are missed.
- [Multi-CDN](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/multi-cdn) — Multi-CDN is the practice of delivering video through two or more content delivery networks at once, with a switching layer that sends each viewer, or each request, to whichever network is performing best for them at that moment.
- [Live event](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/live-event) — A live event is a single scheduled stream with a defined start and end, such as a match, a concert, a conference or a premiere. Unlike a linear channel it does not run continuously, and unlike on-demand video everyone watches it at the same time.
- [Self-hosted OTT](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/self-hosted-ott) — A self-hosted OTT platform is streaming software that you license, usually for a one-time fee and sometimes with source code, and then install and operate on your own cloud account or on-premise servers.
- [Transcoding](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/transcoding) — Transcoding is converting a video from one encoded format into another. On a streaming platform it means taking an uploaded file or a live feed and producing the several resolutions and bitrates needed for adaptive playback on every device.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does auto-scaling mean unlimited capacity?

No. It means capacity adjusts within limits set by the provider, the configuration and your plan. Very large events still need planning.

### Do I need to configure auto-scaling myself?

On a managed platform, no; the vendor operates it. On a self-hosted system it is your team's job to design, test and monitor.

### Should I tell my platform vendor about a big live event?

Yes. Advance notice lets capacity be raised before the audience arrives instead of reacting once it does.
