# What is ad load?

Ad load is the amount of advertising shown per hour of viewing, expressed either as minutes of ads per hour or as the number of ads per hour. It is the main lever an ad-supported service has over both revenue and viewer tolerance.

## Typical ad loads

Streaming runs lighter than broadcast because viewers have alternatives one click away and because targeted ads earn more each.

- Broadcast and cable television: roughly 12 to 18 minutes per hour
- Free ad-supported streaming: roughly 6 to 10 minutes per hour
- Paid ad-supported subscription tiers: roughly 3 to 5 minutes per hour

## Ad load and revenue

Ad revenue is watch hours multiplied by ads per hour, fill rate and CPM, divided by 1,000. Doubling ad load doubles impressions per hour on paper. In practice it also reduces hours watched and increases the number of viewers who leave, so revenue rises by less than double and can fall.

## Tuning ad load

- Start low and raise in steps, watching hours per viewer and return visits
- Vary by content: fewer ads in short videos, standard breaks in long-form
- Vary by viewer: lighter for new viewers in their first sessions
- Cap how often one viewer sees the same ad
- Count only filled slots: an hour with eight slots and 50% fill has an effective load of four ads
- Offer an ad-free tier for those who would rather pay

## Ad load on RentAnOTT

Advertising is included on every RentAnOTT plan as part of AVOD, and the advanced advertising add-on adds frequency control. For how ad-supported video earns, see the AVOD entry. [Read about AVOD](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/avod).

## Related terms

- [Fill rate](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/fill-rate) — Fill rate is the percentage of ad requests that are answered with an ad. If a service requests 1,000 ads and receives 700, its fill rate is 70%. Unfilled requests earn nothing.
- [CPM](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/cpm) — CPM (cost per mille) is the price an advertiser pays for one thousand ad impressions. It is the standard unit for pricing video advertising, and the rate a streaming service earns for each thousand ads it shows.
- [Mid-roll ad](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/mid-roll) — A mid-roll ad is a video advertisement that plays in a break partway through the content, in the manner of a television commercial break. It is the main ad position for long-form and live video.
- [Pre-roll ad](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/pre-roll) — A pre-roll ad is a video advertisement that plays before the content a viewer chose. It is the simplest ad position to implement, since it needs no markers inside the video.
- [Ad-supported tier](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/ad-supported-tier) — An ad-supported tier is a plan on a streaming service that is free or priced below the standard plan because the viewer watches advertising. The service earns from the advertiser as well as, or instead of, the viewer.
- [AVOD](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/avod) — AVOD (advertising-based video on demand) is a streaming model where viewers watch on-demand video for free and the service earns from the ads shown before, during or after it.
- [Watch time](https://www.rentanott.com/glossary/watch-time) — Watch time is the total amount of time viewers spend actually playing video on a service, usually reported in hours per month. It is the most direct measure of how much a service is used.

## Frequently asked questions

### How is ad load measured?

As minutes of advertising per hour of content, or as the count of ads per hour. Eight 30-second ads an hour is four minutes of ad load.

### What ad load should a new service start with?

Low: a few minutes per hour. It is easier to add breaks once you know what your audience tolerates than to win back viewers who left.

### Does a higher ad load always earn more?

No. Past a point, lost viewing outweighs the extra ads, and unfilled slots add interruption without revenue.
